PICK YOUR PASSION: WHICH RIDE SHOULD YOU DO?

Cyclists take many things into account when choosing a ride to support: personal connection to the cause, location, the size of the post-ride burrito. Also consider how the beneficiary spends your money. Charity Navigator (charitynavigator.org) evaluates more than 5,300 organizations and doesn’t charge for access to its listings.

Charity Navigator rates nonprofit organizations based in the United States that receive more than $500,000 in public support each year on a scale of zero to four stars. (About 1,700 groups currently merit the highest rating.) It does not rate hospitals, private or community foundations, colleges or universities, PBS stations, land trusts or preserves, and religious organizations (such as the Salvation Army) that are exempt from filing IRS Form 990, which Charity Navigator uses to determine ratings.

Even if your cause of choice isn’t listed, you can ask questions to determine a nonprofit’s worthiness. (Federal law requires that charities make 3 years of financial data publicly available.) Here are some factors Charity Navigator takes into account.

Organizational Efficiency

What percentage of expenses are relate to programs, as opposed to administration and fund-raising? Ideally, it’s 75 percent or more.

Fund-Raising Efficiency

How many cents does the organization spend to raise each dollar? Fewer than 10 is commendable.

Growth

Are revenues—and services—increasing over time?

Working Capital

How long could the charity sustain its programs without raising more money? The answer should be at least a year.

Pro Tip

When you start to feel stressed and overwhelmed by a hard pace, try this breathing technique: Instead of actively drawing air into the lungs then, passively letting it out (our normal pattern), push the air out and let it naturally flow back in. Bonus: Because of how you activate your lungs to do this, it also helps you get into a low riding position and maintain a flatter back.
